HealthThe Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention has said that it would like to inform the general public that two suspected linked cases of Scarlet fever in children have been reported in Gozo.

The necessary public health measures are being taken and there is no need for alarm, the department added.

Scarlet fever is caused by an infection with group A streptococcus bacteria. The bacteria make a toxin (poison) that can cause the scarlet-colored rash from which this illness gets its name. It is characterized by sore throat, fever, a ’strawberry tongue’, and a fine sandpaper rash over the upper body that may spread to cover almost the entire body.

There was a previous outbreak of five such cases at a Gozo Primary School in January.
