The Times of Malta has reported that the air link between Gozo and Malta is to be restored by May, with a DeHavilland Single Otter seaplane operated by a Maltese-Canadian Company. The air link between the two islands ended last October when Spanish helicopter service providers Helisureste ceased operations.
The 14-passenger seaplane will be operating the service from Grand Harbour to Mgarr, a 10-minute journey, up to 13 times a day in each direction with an estimated cost of LM10 per passenger.
The aircraft, which can land on water as well as on land, will touch down just outside Mgarr Harbour and then taxi in. The company is negotiating with the Malta Maritime Authority and the Ministry of Gozo to locate a suitable mooring spot for the seaplane.
The service will only be hampered by “extreme” weather conditions, such as south-westerly winds, sources have said.
A free courtesy shuttle bus will operate between the airport and Grand Harbour, whilst plans to offer scenic tours around Malta and Gozo and target cruise liner passengers are under discussion.
