A 23 year-old Xewkija man was killed early this morning, at around 4.30am, in a traffic accident in Ghajn Qatet Street in Victoria, near to the rear of Gozo General Hospital.
The man, who has not yet been named, was driving a red Mitsubishi Lancer which crashed into a tower-crane which was parked on the street. A number of concrete blocks from the crane were dislodged by the impact and fell on top of the car, killing the man instantly.
The twisted wreckage of the crane toppled onto the road and adjacent buildings after the impact, a police spokesman said however that the buildings weren’t believed to have been seriously damaged. The road is closed and is expected to remain so for some time.
Duty Magistrate Dr. Paul Coppini is conducting an enquiry and has appointed a number of experts to assist. Police investigations are still ongoing.
