MEPA refuses permit for Marsalforn shoreline development

Otters-restaurant.jpgThe Malta Environment and Planning Authority Development Control Commission has today refused permission for the issue of a permit for the extension of the shoreline premises of the Otters Waterpolo Club in Marsalforn. Commenting on the decision, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Dr Harry Vassallo, said that residents objections had been given the weight they deserve. "This is not the only instance of proposed inappropriate use of such facilities and we must take comfort in today's decision. We hope that MEPA's present attitude will be permanent and that any proposal for development in the proximity to a public beach is made in strict observance of planning policies and rules," Dr Vassallo said. "Now that this project has been shelved, we must continue with our proposal to provide communal swimming facilities in Gozo for the development of aquatic sports including waterpolo while safeguarding public amenity on Gozo's beaches," Dr Vassallo added. Victor Galea AD Secretary General and Gozo Spokesperson said that "today's decision makes it clear that it is possible and necessary to harmonise the many uses of public beaches without incurring irreversible losses. Mr Galea acknowledged the valuable assistance of an active group of residents and of FAA and the Ramblers' Association in achieving this result. Proposals for use of the shoreline whether in Marsalforn or elsewhere should keep in mind the limits established in today's Mepa decision and thereby reassure other beach users"
