Nature Trust wishes to clarify acceptance of Dwerja boathouses

Author: Gozo News | Filed under Letters and Opinions |  1 comment

NTMNature Trust (Malta) wishes to clarify that, contrary to what was stated by some of the media, that NTM has accepted the boathouses found in Dwejra, that these were agreed upon in line with the Dwejra Action Plan approved after a one year public consultation process with all stakeholders concerned as part of the LIFE project. Such an action plan was approved in November 2005.

The boat houses were built on private land in the inland sea area. NTM has not been in favour of this approval, however following the public consultation process and eventually the agreement of the Action Plan for the Dwejra Park, NTM respected this decision. It also results that since these boathouses are in a very sensitive area, the removal of such boat houses would have had further irreversible damage to the site where now sensitive flora had established itself. The boat houses are also close to the area of quaternary deposits and heavy machinery to bring down such structure would have had considerable damage on the site.

NTM cannot understand how certain journalists seemed deem to comment negatively on these actions when it was the same NTM that insisted with the authorities that no further development be allowed and that action should be taken on those boat houses not being used as boat houses.

NTM has always considered the environment as a priority in this area and is in no way trying to please any political party in this issue. In fact NTM has always insisted that political parties should unite on environmental issues and not use it as a political football as all parties still do to date.

Nature Trust (Malta) could suggest that the boathouses will be accepted IF the boathouses were turned over to the Government for a period of time (ten years) and the owners relinquish their ownership for that period of time. The issue of more damage to demolish the boathouses may be true. But there needs to be a severe form of consequence to the ones who ignore the environmental sensitivity of the place. Otherwise copy cats will abound because of the hope that someday it will be accepted.
