On the occasion of Earth Day 2008, Nature Trust Malta calls on the authorities to pull up their socks and implement a National Strategy on clean energy products without further delay
Despite Malta being one of the first countries to bring up the issue of Climate Change at the United Nations, it has now simply fallen behind in the implementation of measures. EU countries are already moving to meet the targets set by the EU – Malta on the other hand still does not have a national strategy.
NTM President Vincent Attard said that Malta still does not have a national strategy on the use of renewable energy and so far only small incentives have been given to the citizen by the Authorities. Wind energy products for domestic use remain still an idea. Even NTM’s Project at Xrobb L-Ghagin is finding all the problems from MEPA to set up a small experimental Wind Turbine to be used as research and for educational facilities. Mr Attard said that is simply a small wind turbine to educate the public on how clean energy can be generated and yet the main authority responsible for the Environment is against! This shows that we are far behind in reaching any targets
NTM said that the Government must simply act. Transport still remains the main pollutant followed by our fossil fuel energy stations – Delimara and Marsa.
Climate change is going to hit us faster then expected and it is the duty of every Government to contribute to mitigate and adapt.
The authorities must do their best to upgrade the public transport, ensure that less pollutant cars are imported, give incentives on less pollutant fuel and seriously take renewable energy as an alternative.
NTM hopes that all the electoral promises for a focus on environment are now withheld and authorities like Mepa start to consider environmental issues. Environmental Projects take ages to be given the Green light by Mepa often at the expense of the environment itself.

I dream of the day where energy needs will not have to be addressed by government entities. But by single individuals in their choice of alternative sources of energies and efficient usage of what they already own. This way we could get ride of state dependence for electricity something which is turning out to be way too expensive when considering the market prices and enemalta’s losses of 6 million in the year ended 2005. Oh and please note financial data has stopped officially coming out since the 2006 annual report which had no accounts for that year ended. Is it normal??
