For the very first time, the Malta Red Cross - Gozo Branch Youth section set up its first camping at Dwejra (28-30th March 2008). This camping was spread out over 3 days, and was characterized by several activities.
A lot of logistical planning was carried out beforehand by the youth leaders. After such a long time planning, on Friday morning, the Land Rover departed from the Headquarters to our destination, Dwejra. For this camping, we used three main tents: two ex-military canvas type tents, and one dining shelter.
Friday afternoon was characterized by the setting up and pitching of the camp. Several youths started arriving at an early hour and helped the youth leaders in the setting of the camp. An introductory meeting was carried out by the camp leader and the youths were allocated in their respective tents. After that the youths enjoyed a BBQ, several night games were carried out at the camp site.
At dawn, the youth leaders prepared the breakfast for all the campers. A Ju-Jitsu demonstration was carried out by a black-belt youth leader in the respective art. All the youths enjoyed practicing some Ju-Jitsu techniques on each other. During the rest hours, the youths were free to enjoy themselves. Some went for a hike, others enjoyed playing football, while some of the youth leaders were preparing lunch.
An abseiling session was conducted by the SART team for beginners, where the youths abseiled down fifteen metres. After this activity, the youths prepared their own meal, which was cooked on cinders. The youths built a small campfire which was followed by a night-hike. After such a long day, everyone was so tired that we slept immediately.
Sunday morning was characterized by an open-air mass, carried out by Fr. Renato Borg. During the sermon, the priest praised the Red Cross' work and encouraged for more voluntary work. After serving the breakfast, another abseiling session was held. In the meantime, some youth leaders started dismounting the tents and preparing some sandwiches. As a conclusion, a feedback session was held, where the youths gave us their opinions about the camp and several proposals were made for a future camp.
The youth leaders would like to thank those who helped in the setting up of the first MRC - GB Youth camping. We are sure that the youths enjoyed this camping, thus we hope that more campings are planned in the near future.
