Xewkija local council has protested that the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage was not consulted by Mepa during its consideration of applications by WasteServ to build a Waste Transfer Station and a Civic Amenity Site at Tal-Kus.
"The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa) has issued permits for the Waste Transfer Station and the Civic Amenity Site respectively within Mgarr Ix-Xini Regional Park without ever consulting the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage," the council said.
"This despite the fact that the site is of significant cultural importance."
The council said that although, during a Mepa board sitting, a member of the Planning Directorate claimed that the Superintendence had been consulted, this claim was denied in correspondence sent by the Superintendence to Mepa.
This notwithstanding archaeological investigations by the Superintendence and the University of Malta in association with the local councils of Xewkija and Sannat that had been underway since 2004 at the sites covered by the applications.
When the attention of the Superintendence was drawn to this matter by the Action Committee of Mgarr Ix-Xini Regional Park, it had written to Mepa recommending that both applications be refused.
