Road works are expected to start in the coming days on the first part of the arterial road leading from the village of Nadur to the picturesque bay of Ramla.
Besides being frequented by a large number of Gozitans, Maltese and tourists, especially during the summer season, the bay is of significant importance to the distinct tourism product on offer in Gozo.
Works on this first phase include the asphalting of a 1.6km stretch of the non-residential part of Ramla Road as well as the construction and upgrading of new and existing pathways. The reconstruction of walls and other upgrading works will also be undertaken to complement the picturesque landscape surrounding this area. Phase two of this project will then consist of works in the residential part of the road.
Where possible, accessibility to the bay will be retained throughout the different stages of works carried out on Phase One with particular attention given to finalise works on the same phase by the beginning of the summer season due to the bay's popularity in the summer months. The project is being financed by the Ministry for Gozo which is currently carrying out several upgrading works on roads in Gozo.
The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, said that the past year saw the Ministry for Gozo implementing several projects for the benefit of the island. Projects included the construction of a number of residential roads around Gozo including those in G?ajnsielem, Victoria, Xag?ra and Ker?em and the construction of arterial roads such as those linking Victoria to San Lawrenz and M?arr to Xewkija.
Minister Debono said that besides projects involving the construction of roads, the Ministry for Gozo has embarked on several other projects which will benefit the sectors of education, health, economy, tourism and the environment. Projects include the extension of the Wistin Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts and the construction of the Crafts Incubation Centre in G?ajnsielem, the construction of a new institute for tourism studies in Qala and the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant amongst others. Other works include the upgrading and modernisation of various schools around Gozo as well as those at the Gozo General Hospital.
