The Malta Environment and Planning Authority's scheme to give financial assistance in the maintenance or replacement of old timber balconies is being extended to all localities in Malta and Gozo, Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino has announced. Mr Pullicino said the scheme, launched in 1996 to improve the urban environment and protect Maltese heritage, has so far benefited 300 applicants.
Residents in 15 localities, including Vittoriosa, Cospicua, Senglea, Kalkara, Valletta, Floriana, Siggiewi, Zejtun and Victoria, and a number of clubs and philanthropic organisations around Malta as well as property owners have received assistance amounting to Lm150,000.
Residents can apply for financial assistance that would cover 60 per cent of the costs as long as these do not exceed Lm600. The money can be used to carry out maintenance works and to replace aluminium with the traditional timber balconies.
Mr Pullicino said that applicants for the scheme would not be means tested, that is, anyone can benefit from it irrespective of one's financial income.
The request for assistance can be made on a form obtainable from Mepa's office in Floriana or from local councils as from October.
