January usually brings heavy showers, strong winds and cold temperatures, but this year was opposite to the norm, it was the warmest and the second driest January ever recorded at Malta International Airport Meteorological Office.
The average temperature during the month was a balmy 17.5 C, 2.5 C above the usual average temperature. The warmest day was the 20th, when the thermometer reached 21.9 C. The warmest January day ever recorded was 22.8 C on January 29, 1939. Night time temperatures were also warmer than usual, the average temperature being 11.5 C which is 1.8 C above the average.
January was also exceptional in that it was the second driest in the past 84 years, with a mere 8.6mm of rainfall and only 0.1mm more than the driest January ever recorded in 1983, the normal average rainfall for January is 95.5mm.
January was also sunnier than average with a mean of 6 hours and 12 minutes of bright sunshine each day, which is 63 per cent of the sunshine possible during January and equates to 37 hours and 12 minutes more sunshine than usual.
The average windspeed of 13.3 kilometres per hour was also low for the time of year.
