Mobile-Wimax.jpgIng. Joseph Muscat, Vodafone Malta Head of Mobile Plus, has recently addressed the Global Mobile WiMAX Congress in Cannes regarding ‘WiMAX and GSM for triple play’. Ing. Muscat’s presentation was a regional case-study regarding the trialing and deployment of the Vodafone WiMAX service in Malta. Other speakers were drawn from the major fixed and mobile operators, broadband players and equipment vendors.

The congress focused mainly on service provider strategies in response to the WiMAX opportunity, and evaluating business models for success in this marketplace. It was also an opportunity to review the latest updates on spectrum allocation, standards evolution, technology roadmaps, device availability and the evolution of the consumer market for content and applications.

Vodafone Malta is the first and only local operator to offer broadband and Voice over IP services to residential and business customers through fixed WiMAX, in the 3.5 GHz spectrum. Fixed WiMAX can be used for several applications including wireless broadband connections in the home and high speed connectivity for businesses as a direct replacement of ADSL or cable internet service.

Vodafone offers packages from as low as €13.86 / Lm5.95 a month for an internet service with a speed of 2Mbps and 10Gbytes in free downloads. Customers can opt for other options such as higher download limits and Voip telephony including 200 minutes worth of free local calls. Customers subscribing to Vodafone’s WiMAX Voip service do not need to change their current fixed line number.
