Vandals struck overnight at Wied Ghollieqa Nature Reserve and destroyed information panels within the area. The panels were used to teach children about the importance of valleys, how to recognise trees and animals in the valley and the importance of riparian habitats.
Nature Trust (Malta), which manages this reserve, condemns such acts. Vandalism only serves to show that there are still persons who enjoy acting against civil society and against the rights of everyone to enjoy nature areas.
NTM has reported the incident to the police and urges the authorities to step up their efforts to catch the culprits and ensure that they receive the punishment they deserve.
The NGO also called for more surveillance and the setting up of rangers in such protected and managed areas.
Nature Trust will be replacing the boards again to show that they will not be discouraged by such vandalistic acts. Anyone wishing to support the organisation to replace these boards can send donations to Nature Trust P.O. Box 9 Valletta
