Wirt Ghawdex has voiced its concern over the dire state of some of the ancient monuments which hold such great importance in Gozo’s heritage.
Xlendi Tower, St Cecilia medieval chapel in Ghajnsielem, and the votive plinth recently removed from Archbishop Pietro Pace Street in Victoria, are three such monuments which the society have been continually bringing to the attention of government ministries, departments and agencies.
The NGO said that although the Cultural Heritage Act places responsibility for the proper protection of such monuments on specific entities, nothing has been done about the monuments, and letters sent to these entities over the past three years have gone unheeded.
Wirt Ghawdex concluded by saying that both the tower and the chapel are in imminent danger of collapse and that works being carried out near the chapel may well be causing further structural damage to the already fragile building.
