The stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 2,330 in the first quarter of 2008, to stand at 289,450. As at end March 2008, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 289,450. Of these, 76.0 per cent were private vehicles, while commercial vehicles accounted for 16.3 per cent.
New licences
New licences issued during the first quarter of 2008 amounted to 3,276. Private vehicles accounted for 2,239 new licences, or 68.3 per cent of the total. In the reference quarter, the majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within 'Class 1' (<1300 cc). This class accounted for 1,333 new licences, while vehicles in 'Class 2' (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 304. Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 1,211, or 65.4 per cent of the total, while newly-licensed 'used' motor vehicles amounted to 1,028.
Exported, scrapped and garaged
In the first quarter of 2008, exported vehicles amounted to 11, an increase of two over the fourth quarter of 2007. Scrapped vehicles numbered 545 of which 59.6 per cent were 'Class 1' vehicles (<1300 cc). For the period under review, garaged vehicles (see definition in methodological notes) amounted to 1,123 or 66.9 per cent of the total vehicles which are no longer on the road..
