The Prime Minister outlines his vision for Gozo’s future

Speaking at a regional conference in San Lawrenz, The Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, said that the Nationalist Party had throughout its history always given importance to Gozo and that this will continue by means of a clear and concrete vision to help the people of Gozo succeed.
Dr Gonzi said that the government was also setting up priorities exclusively for Gozo, including a plan for Gozo to be powered completely by alternative sources of energy.
Gozo, he said, will benefit from the other pillars that make up the government's vision, which will include financial services, tourism, health and education. Dr Gonzi reiterated that Gozo is high on the government's priority list in such matters.
Dr Gonzi went on to say that the country as a whole faced several challenges, notably investment in the training of workers and the rising prices of oil and grain. Another challenge was to ensure that, in achieving sustainable growth, Gozo and Malta retained and improved their attractions.
The Prime Minister concluded by saying that the country's future development will evolve around the government's three main pillars: work, education and the environment and that these will help the country achieve its aspirations.

Dr Lawrence Gonzi says that he has a concrete vision for Gozo. No doubt he is referring to concrete marina’s, concrete hotels etc.
I find this speech by the Prime Minister very encouraging as I have felt for years that the touting of tourism projects and construction projects as Gozo’s main hope of job opportunities is insulting, inferring that the most that Gozitans aspire to is jobs as chambermaids, waiters and builders. Financial services, IT and similar service industries would offer Gozitan youths real opportunities to aspire to.
I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Tyrrell’s thoughts. Ruining pristine areas appears to be Dr Gonzi’s raison d’etre. See Hondoq and Ramla as a prime example. No matter what they say, from the way they’re acting, it’s obvious that Government wants these projects at all costs, much to the speculators’ delight of course.
Excellent. However, can the Government please ensure something is done urgently about Gozitan roads as they reflect so badly on the country? Full of holes. Third World countries have better roads! They are a disastrous advertisement for our tourist visitors. This is 2008 and we are in the European Union.
The main roads to the beaches in Gozo are a disgrace and something should be done about them, after all the beaches are the main tourist attraction. the trouble with the government, labour or nationalist party ,is all for Malta and very little or nothing for Gozo.
So go on Mr. Gonzi do something about it, let us be proud of you.
