Ever since its inception in October 2002, the Gozo Youth Wind Band and Orchestra has been entertaining the general public with band and orchestral music repertoires in the most colourful manner, including styles ranging from Classical to Modern, Film and Show Music.
Amongst the excerpts performed one finds: Harry Potter, Gladiator, The Mask of Zorro, Pirates of The Carribean, La Forza Del Destino, Aladin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Miss Saigon, Sound of Music and more.
The Gozo Youth Wind Band and Orchestra has taken part in various important events in the island of Gozo including: The inauguration of the Sant'Anna Residence at The Gozo General Hospital, the1st Anniversary of EU Membership, concerts in Marsalforn, Xlendi, Village Squares and the10th Anniversary of the Arka Respite Centre. This to compliment the much-awaited annual concert at the Feast of Don Bosco at the Oratory Theatre in Victoria.
The Gozo Youth Band consists of 50 youth players, while the Youth Orchestra consists of 43 musicians, all from Gozo, who are currently furthering their studies in their respective instruments both in Gozo and Malta. These young musicians meet and rehearse concert pieces to the enjoyment of their patrons, who each year await their annual performances mainly of indoor and outdoor concerts by the Youth Wind Band while the Youth Orchestra is mainly engaged in an annual musical production organised by The Helping Hands Group around the March/April period.
A number of companies during the past years have been instrumental in supporting this initiative taken by Mro Joseph Grech of this Gozitan product. As time passes more entities and distinguished personalities recognise the fact that such a project was fruitful in providing these young musicians an opportunity to expose their talents otherwise buried within their homes. Lately, H.E. The President of Malta, Dr Edward Fenech Adami, during his official visit in the locality of Victoria had the opportunity to assist one of the Youth Orchestra's rehearsals held within the Oratory Don Bosco premises.
Last May the Gozo Youth Band took part in the 1st edition of Notte Gozitana. Other concerts are being planned in Marsalforn, Xlendi, and Victoria in the very near future.
