Moviment Graffitti has urged the Government to take into consideration the essentiality of Maltese bread, both as a basic social need in our society and also as a tradition which should be fully preserved.
They further urged the Goverment to increase the subsidisation to compensate for the increase in the price of flour per 50 kilo sack, highlighting the market price of a 50-kilo sack of flour, which has been estimated to have risen from Lm7.08 (EUR16.52) to Lm8.68(EUR20.26).
"The Government should take into consideration the essentiality of Maltese bread as a basic social need in our society. The importance of this food item should not be dictated by economic interests at the exclusion of social interests. Hence, the government should not utilise a mere financial calculation when it comes to such social needs".
"The state subsidy on Maltese bread should be raised to compensate for the increase in the price of flour. The state subsidy on Maltese bread is essential for low-income families, who are already facing difficulties on their quality of life because of various burdens".
"The Government can compenstate for the subsidy to bakers through income from other sources. For example, the Government should consider an increase in taxation of bank profits and the gaming industry, thus generating income for social purposes".
