Around three hundred children participated in the 2007 edition of Skola Sajf which comes to an end this week. For the last eight weeks, nine centres spread around Gozo were the hub of continuous activities organised by Gozitan University students through the co-ordination of the Ministry for Gozo.
Skola Sajf 2007 included drawing and painting, crafts, games and informative meetings with personalities involved in the voluntary and social sectors.
The programme for this year was primarily focused on three themes: the introduction of the Euro, the importance of healthy eating, and animal care. Students were given the opportunity to create projects illustrating these themes, which are now being displayed in an exhibition set up at Sir Arturo Mercieca Primary School in Victoria.
During the exhibition inauguration, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, spoke about the success of this educational initiative in Gozo. Minister Debono commented on how the items displayed give evidence to the commitment employed by all those who offered this educational experience to children during their school holidays. Minister Debono also explained how the Ministry for Gozo gives priority to educational services on the island by investing in a series of projects and initiatives aimed towards enhancing facilities in various schools in Gozo, giving also attention to improve accessibility to students with disabilities.
The exhibition inaugurated on Tuesday includes items on display prepared by students who attended the Sannat Special Unit as well as those who followed the Klabb Sajf programme. Klabb Sajf offers curricular assistance to students who need particular attention.
An initiative offered for the first time to Skola Sajf participants this summer was that taken by Heritage Malta offices in Gozo in collaboration with the Skola Sajf centres, where children visited two museums or archaeological sites under the responsibility of the national agency in Gozo. Besides being provided with an experience that helps children gain more information about our history and national heritage, the students were entertained to a hands-on experience at the Museum of Natural Science within the Citadel.
Again this year every centre in Gozo took part in a quiz competition which this year centred around the theme of the Euro. The winning Gozitan team was that from Sir Arturo Mercieca primary school in Victoria, which managed to attain second place after participating in the final round with other teams from centres in Malta.
Activities organised this week, which will bring to an end another edition of Skola Sajf, include a sport activity which was held at the Gozo Sports Complex on Monday 3 September, while all Skola Sajf children will be participating in a talent show to be held at the Oratory Don Bosco on Thursday.
This week's activities are concluding another initiative taken in favour of a holistic education to young students in Gozo.
