The sewage treatment plant near Mgarr ix-Xini has been completed on time and on budget, the Public Investments and IT Ministry has said.
The plant was commissioned on Friday and will process the majority of sewage in Gozo. The project cost Lm3.2 million, 51 per cent of which will be funded by the European Union’s pre-accession funds.
The plant will be converting the raw sewage into around 6,000 cubic metres of water with state-of-the-art equipment. Most of this treated water will be used for irrigation, any such water not used will be discharged 80 metres below sea level and 140 metres offshore.
