Sea transport increases by 4.5% in 2nd quarter

Sea Transport 2006-2008
In the second quarter of 2008, commuters between Malta and Gozo increased by 4.5 per cent, totalling 1,036,118. Furthermore, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 4.7 per cent, totalling 265,230.

The increase in demand was serviced by an increase in supply. The number of trips in the second quarter stood at 4,861, implying an increase of 3.2 per cent over the comparable period last year. The highest number of trips was recorded in June - 1,674 or 34.4 per cent of the total number of trips for the period under review.

During the second quarter in 2008, the Gaudos decreased its trips by 595, when compared to the corresponding period last year. Conversely, the Ta' Pinu and the Malita vessels increased their trips by 598 and 147 respectively, to compensate for the decrease in the load of Gaudos and to cater for the increase in demand.

Charts 1 and 2 above show the monthly average number of passengers and vehicles per trip in respect of each vessel. Malita's average is consistently higher compared to the other two vessels, due to its greater vehicle-carrying capacity.
