The Karwela and the Comino Land, the two vessels scuttled off ix-Xatt l-Ahmar in Gozo on Saturday, have settled on the seabed “in a perfect position”.
Mark Busuttil, the diving representative for the Gozo Tourism Association, said that he was very happy with the position of both boats.
“Initially I was a bit concerned about the Comino Land because it plunged into the sea on its side. But it landed on the seabed in the spot we had planned,” he said, adding that both had settled 20 metres from the reef at a depth of 35 metres.
“The visibility was not very good when I dived on Saturday evening but from what I could feel it’s perfect. We plan to dive again later this week.”
There had been concern about avoiding a repeat of the time when the decommissioned Gozo Channel ferry Xlendi turned upside down due to rough seas after it was scuttled a few years ago.
The rusty carcasses, which have been out of operation for about four years, will provide an alternative attraction for divers in the south of the island when the sea is too rough on the north and west coasts.
The ships were thoroughly cleaned by Cassar Ship Repair, which removed 18 tonnes of oil and fuel from the Karwela alone.
The Karwela has been left with paint whereas the Comino Land has been completely stripped to establish which one will attract a greater growth of micro algae and other organisms.
