Schola Cantorum Jubilate

The Archpriest together with the Kumitat ‘Festi Gimgha l-Kbira’ of the Zejtun Parish Church, is organizing its annual sacred concert in its Parish Church dedicated to St. Catherine. For this year’s concert, the committee have invited the young independent Gozitan Schola Cantorum Jubilate which was founded in the year 2000. Since its foundation, the choir has contributed professionally to the local musical environment.

‘O Crux Ave Spes Unica’, a sacred Lenten concert is being held on Thursday 29th of March 2007 at 7.15pm.

Schola Cantorum Jubilate specializes in the sacred polyphony which in this particular liturgical period helps the congregation to meditate and contemplate in prayer in this time of penitence. The lent is the time which should make us understand how great is God the Almighty who loves us and forgive all our sins.

The repertoire of this concert includes sacred motets like ‘Adoramus Te’, ‘O Domine Jesu Christe’, ‘Ubi Caritas’, ‘Popule Meus’ and other pieces by universally known composers like Palestrina, Bach, Hassler and Durufle. The program includes two compositions by Mro. Carlo Diacono who has a special bond with the locality of Zejtun. The pieces are ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Plange’.

Since this concert is on the eve of the traditional celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows in Malta, the choir will be interpreting a ‘Stabat Mater’. The director and soprano of the choir, Marouska Attard will be interpreting also two pieces: ‘Pie Jesu’ by Gabriel Faure’ and ‘Ave Maria’ by Giulio Caccini. The program includes two instrumental pieces by Charlene Caruana, a violinist of the Jubilate Chamber Orchestra.

At the end of the concert, the Archpriest will inaugurate a brand new statue of Jesus meeting Simon from Sirene, sculpted by the renowned Alfred Camilleri Cauchi.
