Responsible Tourism and the Culture of Hospitality - Ager Foundation

The Gozo-based Ager Foundation has just returned from Turin Italy, where its delegates very successfully participated in the International Terra Madre ’slow food’ Fair that brought together 1,577 representatives of member communities who produce fair, clean and good food in a responsible and sustainable way.

The Ager Foundation had been specifically invited by the organizers to make a presentation to the conference about ‘Responsible Tourism and the Culture of Hospitality’, an ethos that Ager has been very effectively implementing since its inception earlier this year.

Mr Victor Galea, the chairperson, stressed that “When the culture of a place develops on two fronts, with those who visit and those who host, tourism becomes one of the keys to sustainable development, to equal exchanges and cultural enrichment. This constitutes the basis for new frontiers of responsible tourism and for innovative concerns working to create healthy economies”; a reality demonstrably attested to by the range and variety of eco and agro tourism services featured in www.agerfoundation.com which readers are invited to explore.

Gozitan sheep farmers, Mrs. Marianna and Ms. Tereza Mercieca dynamically demonstrated how tourists visiting Gozo can experience the tranquil life of a local shepherd and actively participate in making ‘gbejniet’ - Gozitan cheeselets.

Mr. Eugene Bajada presented the multifarious skills and techniques involved in wine making and the process of preparing Gozitan sweets and traditional dishes, another option Ager offers to visitors to Gozo.

Following the very enthusiastic reception its representatives received from the conference delegates, the Ager Foundation was invited by the organizers to pioneer a ‘Slow Food Mediterranean Network’, the specific aim of which is to strengthen and consolidate an association of ’slow food’ communities, cooks and universities, establishing co-operative communication channels throughout the Mediterranean region.

The Ager Foundation gratefully acknowledges the input of the MTA and “Forum Malta fl-Ewropa” who partially subsidized the traveling expenses to the Fair.
