To end this year's Skola Sport activities, on Saturday the 24th of May, Gozitan students who had participated in the various activities organised during this scholastic year took part in a progressive show at the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria.
The participants, whose ages varied from Year 2 primary school children to Form 5 secondary school students, participated in a progress show with students performing one of many sport disciplines practiced during the Skola Sport sessions. Held within the Gozo Sports Complex by qualified instructors, these sessions took place every Saturday morning from November to May with disciplines including gymnastics, basketball, breakdance, hip-hop, martial arts and sports climbing. Kidsblitz was also organised for those children attending Year 2 and Year 3 primary schools.
Last Saturday's program kicked off with warm-up exercises followed by a hip-hop and breakdance demonstration by the popular group from Malta, the 'Waterfall Dancers' who were accompanied by the singer Siconix. Performances by renowned singers Miriam Christine Borg and Klinsman continued to entertain the crowd during this afternoon of sport, dance and music activities. At the end of the activity, Mr. Albert Scerri, officer in charge Sports Complex, presented the participants with medals, trophies and certificates.
During a short address, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, mentioned how initiatives taken by the Ministry for Gozo had seen the beginning of Skola Sport in Gozo. Apart from stressing the importance the sports sector holds, Minister Debono also spoke about the significant health benefits the practice of sport offers.
Minister Debono continued by saying that the Sports Complex within the Ministry for Gozo is continuously working to improve facilities and services offered to the public. Recent works include the refurbishment of the main entrance, the modernisation of the administrative section and sanitary facilities, as well as the setting-up of a table-tennis room. Works are also currently being carried out on two areas within the Gozo Sports Complex to include the setting up of a new gym/carido area as well as a weight-lifting room.
Physical classes in yoga, pilates and aerobics are also being organised at the Gozo Sports Complex in collaboration with the Health Promotion Unit within the Gozo General Hospital, this to continue promoting the benefits offered by sport as well as leading a healthy lifestyle.
