The new waste water treatment plant at Ras il-Hobz, near Mgarr ix-Xini, was officially inaugurated yesterday morning by the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and the Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono.
The plant which cost over €3 million was co-financed by the European Union through the EU pre-accession funds.
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said in her speech that the building of this plant was the largest project in Gozo that was co-funded by the EU and the only infrastructural project in Malta to benefit from pre-accession funds. This plant enables all sewage in Gozo to be treated before it is piped out into the sea.
Minister Debono added that Gozo was allotted a minimum of 10% of EU Structural Funds during the first funding period 2004 - 2006 that were utilised for roads, tourism projects, the environment, agriculture, small businesses and training among others. During the second funding period, Gozo has once again been guaranteed another minimum of 10% of funds.
