Nature Trust (Malta) has welcomed the statement from the Malta Labour Party, that it will do anything within the law and Malta Environment and Planning Authority regulations to try and reverse the Ramla permit.
NTM said it strongly feels that the fact that the Ulysses Lodge permit was granted years back does not justify the issuing of a fresh permit for a new development, even if it would be taking place on the existing foot print. NTM feels that two wrongs can never make a right and that once the old development had been abandoned the site should have been reversed to an Outside Development Zone.
The fact remains that such a development will still not be sustainable, especially in such an area of high ecological and landscape value. We cannot afford to destroy Ramla, as we have done with other coastal areas in our Islands. Gozo and Malta are already overdeveloped, and much of the landscape and ecological value of our coastline has been ruined and irreversibly damaged.
Our Islands badly need an environmental political agenda where such sites are fully protected once and for all . Not even developments that can allegedly be camouflaged by trees and vegetation should be given the green light.
