Following reports in the press, Nature Trust (Malta) has expressed its concern that according to the reports people were being asked to apply for development on sites in Outside Development Zones areas with MEPA.
The organisation called on the authorities to immediately investigate this rumour and take immediate action, if true, so such abuses are not tolerated.
Nature Trust said that whilst congratulating Dr Gonzi on the election results, it urged the new Prime Minister to now keep his word and start as soon as possible the reform of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority without further delay and to ensure that equal weighting is given to the Environment in the boards where decisions are taken. The NGO also urged the new Government to fully protect our environment and ensure that ODZ applications are no longer considered for development when applications are submitted to MEPA.
The NGO pointed out that our islands have already a land use problem and when one considers the 54,000 vacant properties, development cannot be allowed any longer as this will only be unsustainable development. The Ngo had proposed to the political parties in its memorandum for elections that the Environment Protection Unit within MEPA should not only be strengthened, but if needs be, be set up as an autonomous authority to safeguard our fragile environment.
