National Trees Planted in Gozo

A group of schoolchildren from Gozo planted a number of Araar trees at Kercem in a scheme to promote the species sponsored by APS Bank.

The Araar tree (Tetraclinis articulata - Sigra ta' l-Gharghar), is the national tree of Malta but it is fairly rare. Up to about 10 years ago there was only one planted specimen in Gozo.

Lawrence Scicluna, senior manager of the banks Gozo branch in Victoria, said that through its sponsorship, the bank aimed to preserve the tree for posterity and also to raise awareness about the forest environment in general.

The Araar trees were planted at Dar il-Lunzjata Environment Centre in a programme of activities organised by the School Arbor Committee for Forest Week, observed between January 15 and today. National Arbor Day was marked on Monday.

The Dar il-Lunzjata centre is the Education Division's environment facility and is used by all Gozitan pupils including those attending Church schools.

The School Arbor Committee is recommending that schools should plant and have three specimens of the national tree on their grounds.

This would ensure cross-pollination and a good annual seed crop which could be collected for sowing by the students at the beginning of the scholastic year.
