Nadur has been awarded by the European Commission as one of “The Best Emerging European Rural Destinations”.
The project, which was launched for the first time last year, consists of a number of participating countries identifying a locality or region within their national territory which can qualify and be eventually awarded as a ‘European Destination of Excellence’.
The EU Affairs & Policy Development Unit within the Ministry for Tourism & Culture is participating in this initiative which is organised by the European Commission and supported by the EU Member States and Candidate countries
For the year 2006, the theme of the pilot project is related to rural tourism, the subtitle of the award is “Best Emerging Rural Destinations” .
Eligible destinations are those which have implemented, in any of the last 3 years, initiatives that have contributed to the promotion of the local tourist offer through a better appreciation of the rural, natural and cultural heritage.
Selections procedures are being carried out at national level in the first semester of 2007 by the 9 Members States which have joined this pilot project: Austria, Belgium (Wallonia), Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia and Malta, plus 1 candidate country: Croatia.
The winning 10 destinations of excellence will be awarded in a European-level conference which will take place at the next Annual Forum on Tourism in Portugal in October.
