Gozo Courts59 year-old Paul Muscat from Nadur has been found guilty of cultivating cannabis in his fields and the surrounding area in Wied Bingemma in Nadur. He has been sentenced to 18 years in prison and fined €45,000. The juries verdict was reached by seven votes to two.

He was also found guilty of trafficking and possession with intent to distribute by eight votes to one and not guilty of association with other persons to grow and traffic the cannabis by a unanimous vote.

The large amount of cannabis involved was noted by Justice Joseph Galea Debono in passing his sentence. He also maintained the need for uniformity in drug cases, particularly with impressing on the public the damage done by such illicit substances.

Prior to the sentence being passed, defence lawyer, Dr Joseph Brincat, appealed to the court to consider the defendant’s clean conduct prior to the case and also his heart problems.

The prosecutor Lara Lanfranco however asked that the court to consider the fact that the accused attempted to slander the police during the trial.
