The special Pauline festivities coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the erection of the Parish reached their climax on Sunday, with not only the traditional festa procession with the artistic statue of St Paul, but also a procession with the relic of his arm brought over to Gozo from Malta for this special occasion.
The relic is kept and venerated in the collegiate parish of St Paul in Valletta and it lies at the core of a cult which in Malta goes back hundreds of years. The relic is regularly carried in procession along the streets of Valletta during the annual festivities that commemorate the shipwreck of the Apostle on the shores of the island of Malta.
It was not the first time that the relic has been in Gozo. It was first brought to the island 25 years ago, also in association with special parish festivities at Munxar.
This year Munxar is also marking the 75 years of its titular statue by Gozitan Agostino Camilleri.
