"The Government should not support neo-liberal reforms in Postal Services" - workers' rights Moviment Graffitti has voiced its opposition to the total privatisation of Maltapost, saying that this can result in less workers' rights, private monopoly and an inferior postal service with less social responsibility.
"When the Government sold many shares to Transend some years ago, this resulted in inferior and more costly postal services, longer queues at post offices and less rights for the remaining postal workers. It is more than obvious that the main interest of Transend was to make more profits with less workers. Transend left Malta with a totally negative record in postal services".
Moviment Graffitti expressed its disagreement with the liberalisation of postal services in the European Union. However it added that, "Even though postal services in the European Union should be liberalised within the coming years, this does not mean that Government should necessarily sell all its shares. The Government is now trying to be more neo-liberal than many Governments elsewhere, as it will not even retain its shares in Maltapost. Effectively profit maximisation will be more important than any sense of social responsibility".
"The fact that Government is now in the process of totally privatising Maltapost is a further step in the wrong direction. It is evident that the Government has not learned from past mistakes. Government should stop supporting Neo-liberal reforms within the European Union".
