The Industry, Investment and IT Ministry has said that criticism about the increase in the Gozo ferry fare by opposition MP Anton Refalo was nothing but hypocrisy.
In a statement, the ministry said that fares were now the same as when Dr Refalo was parliamentary secretary nine years ago, without any compensation for the cost of living.
The ministry added that in these past nine years, Gozitans had been given various discounts for their travels on the ferry.
The ministry also said that Dr Refalo had got his figures wrong and that between June 2004 and 2005 there was an increase of 16,898 Gozitans who crossed to Malta, not 73,000 as Dr Refalo claimed.
The ministry also added that the largest ferry price hike took place when the MLP was in government between 1996 and 1998. In addition, the PN government put prices down, reformed the service and offered various discounts for Gozitan passengers who lived or studied in Malta.
The ministry said Dr Refalo knew that there were bigger and better schemes yet to come into force and this is because Gozo Channel’s financial status has improved and has now become profitable through the prudent policies that the government introduced.
