Ministry replies to AD’s statement on domestic violence

Social-Solidarity.jpgThe Family and Social Solidarity Ministry has issued a statement replying to a statement made by Alternattiva Demokratika about domestic violence. The ministry said that domestic violence legislation had in fact come into effect in March of last year.

A major innovation was that it was no longer necessary for a formal request to be made by a victim to the police, the ministry added. The police were duty bound to investigate every report they received of domestic violence, even if these were made by third parties. After the necessary investigations, the police would then take any steps required, according to what had occurred. The ministry said it had also drawn up guidelines with the police on how the police should proceed with such cases.

The ministry added that there were also other important concepts which are aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence, especially where children are concerned and that the aggressor could also be forced to leave the family home.

The aim of the government was to continually improve on the existing services, already in Malta there were no fewer than five shelters, and another in Gozo, the ministry concluded.

“The ministry said it had also drawn up guidelines with the police on how the police should proceed with such cases.” Why are these guidelines not made public?

“…and another (shelter home) in Gozo, the ministry concluded.” When did the last ’survivor’ find refuge in the shelter home (Dar Karolina) in Gozo? The statistic during 1996-97 shows that an average of 9 cases of domestic violence found refuge in Dar Karolina per month. Why were no official statistics published since then?

A group of volunteers called ‘Friends of Dar Karolina’ did fund raising events to raise money for this shelter home. They furnished each unit with cookers, fridges and other equipment. Yet the Domestic Violence Commission informed that this house is still undergoing refurbishment (funded by the tax-payers money).
Does refurbishment need to take up more than 10 years?

      So…
can we truly say that we have a shelter home in Gozo for the service of survivors of domestic violence?

      Please get real.
