Malta recently organised a business breakfast for employers and HR managers from the local construction industry with a view to assisting it with recruitment issues.
Felix Borg, General Manager of Operations at the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), explained the several services and schemes offered by ETC and from which several local companies and workers are benefiting. Mr. Borg also spoke of the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling recruitment problems, which must include raising skill levels, improving conditions of work and ensuring full health and safety measures.
Raphael Scerri, EURES Manager, explained the various services of EURES. The European Employment Services is a cooperation network of public employment services to facilitate the free movement of workers within the EU 27, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland.
During the business breakfast, an emphasis was made on the EURES portal which is a very popular tool among foreign and local employers. Over one million vacancies and 100,000 CV’s are available on the portal. A number of local employers from different sectors have already successfully recruited employees from Europe through the portal.
Robert Suban, Manager at the Employment Licences Unit at ETC, explained work permit procedures and obligations of employers when recruiting foreign nationals.
Joe Cutajar, Senior Manager at the ETC Training Services Division, gave an overview of the training services offered by the Corporation, namely apprenticeships, traineeships and several training programmes related to the construction industry.
At the end of the meeting, guests had the opportunity to meet EURES advisers from Bulgaria and Hungary.
Employers and HR managers wishing to learn more about EURES and how it can help with recruitment, are asked to contact one of the EURES advisers at ETC on freephone 800 765 05 or by email at eures.etc@gov.mt. More information on ETC employment schemes and services, training programmes, financial aid for the training of employees and EURES can be obtained through the ETC website www.etc.gov.mt.
