MUTA Preparatory Meeting was held at Paphos in Cyprus on the 10th. of December 2007 to attempt to form a Mediterranean Teachers Trade Unions Forum. Nine Countries, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, Italy, Serbia, Spain, France and Malta participated representing fourteen different Unions. This meeting was hosted by POED and OLTEK both Cypriot Teachers' Unions. Other Mediterranean Countries were invited for this important event but could not attend. They however promised to be present in the next meeting.

This meeting discussed the Setting Up of a Mediterranean Teachers Trade Unions Forum with the aim of promoting and discussing the role of education systems and teachers in facing the global phenomenon of economic migration. The idea is to unite Teachers in the Mediterranean Region, to encourage teacher mobility and to share good practices. This new forum is to establish a structure that will be able to deal with issues that are putting pressure and endanger the Union movement in the Mediterranean Region. It was also agreed to establish a network of information exchange.

The MUT delegation was made up of John Bencini, MUT President and Council members Lydia Chetcuti, Marlene Housley, Charles Grech and Joanne Vella. The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Cairo or Lisbon. During their stay in Cyprus, the Maltese delegation visited various educational institutions including a Primary School and Secondary School in Paphos and a Vocational College in Larnaca. The POED also hosted the Maltese delegation at its Headquarters in Nicosia. Mr. Demitris Mikellides , POED President spoke about the Stuctures and organization of his Union and briefly explained the Educational system in Cyprus. The Maltese delegation was then invited to an excursion of Nicosia and surroundings.
