The medieval chapel of St Cecilia, which is the only surviving medieval chapel in Gozo, has been been badly damaged in a fire which was deliberately set by vandals.
Wirt Ghawdex has condemned what it termed as 'barbaric vandalism', and has reiterated that it has been calling for a number of years for the enforcement of the expropriation order on the chapel made 11 years ago. "Now, more than ever before, immediate action must be taken by the authorities to safeguard this important monument from total destruction," the NGO said.
The medieval chapel has already been utterly neglected for many years and is in imminent danger of collapse. Some 11 years ago, Din l-Art Helwa requested permission to save and restore this historic building, and also carried out a survey of its condition.
A decision on this issue must be reached promptly and without any further delay, as work must commence before the winter rains set in, to prevent the chapel from being damaged any further, or indeed collapsing.
The Superintendence for Cultural Heritage and the Ghajnsielem local council are aware that the building is in danger of collapse, and have repeatedly requested that action be taken immediately. The Ministry for Gozo has also been informed of the situation.
