Meat production in the fourth quarter of 2007 amounted to 3,886 tonnes, an increase of 1.4 per cent over the corresponding period in 2006. The volume of beef production in the fourth quarter of 2007 decreased by 6.8 per cent as a result of a 10.9 per cent decline in the number of cattle slaughtered although the average carcass weight increased by 4.6 per cent over the same period in 2006.
Pigmeat production rose marginally by 0.6 per cent, mainly on account of an increase in the average carcass weight of pigs of 6.3 per cent, from 79.6 kilograms in the fourth quarter of 2006 to 84.6 kilograms in the fourth quarter of 2007, which compensated for the decline in the number of pigs slaughtered by 5.4 per cent.
Broiler-meat production increased by 5.7 per cent as a result of an increase in the number of broilers slaughtered (+7.6 per cent) when compared to the same period of 2006, although the average carcass weight fell by 1.8 per cent over the comparative period in 2006.
The producer value of animals slaughtered at licensed slaughterhouses registered a decrease of 3.2 per cent, to stand at Lm2.66m (€6.19m) in the fourth quarter of 2007. While the producer value of broiler meat increased by 9.9 per cent as a result of an increase in broilers slaughtered, this increase was offset by a decrease in the producer value of beef and pigmeat production of 16.4 per cent and 4.5 per cent respectively. Meat production in licensed slaughterhouses for 2007 increased by 3.1 per cent to 14.0 million kilograms. The increase in the number of broilers slaughtered contributed to the increase in volume.
On the contrary, beef meat and pigmeat production fell by 0.9 per cent and 2.4 per cent respectively over 2006. In contrast, the producer value of all livestock slaughtered declined marginally by 0.3 per cent to stand at Lm9.7m (€22.5m). Declines in the producer value of beef meat (-3.5 per cent) and pigmeat (-6.3 per cent) were offset by an increase in the producer value of broiler-meat (16.3 per cent).
