Malta was represented in the 20th Anniversary of the Holland Dans Spektakel Championships by Steven Fenech and Mandy Ghio. The couple have been reaching finals of major competitions throughout the world, winning the German Open Classic Latin American Wheelchair Dance Championships in 2007.
In Holland they were competing against the best dancers in the world and were placed 5th in the Class 2 Ballroom Championships and 5th in the Class 2 Latin American Championships. With 18 countries attending the event, it is the biggest competition in the world for wheelchair dancers.
The committee for Wheelchair Dance of the International Paraylmpic Committee (IPC) has said that the second biggest competition in the world, is now the Malta Open Dance Spectacular which is being held this year on November 29th / 30th.
A spokesperson for the Malta Wheelchair DanceSport Association said, “It is a pity that so few Maltese who are disabled, take part in competitive sports (whatever the sport), as it enables the disabled to mix with other countries, to make friends and learn through sport. The association is also looking for able bodied dancers in Malta and Gozo, to partner wheelchair dancers.
Any person interested in Wheelchair Dance or sponsoring couples to attend other International competitions should contact the President or Secretary on 99864110 or visit the website: www.maltawda
