The increase in the cost of ferry tickets was keeping people away from Gozo and creating financial pressure on Gozitans, Labour spokesman for Gozo Anton Refalo said yesterday.
The Gozitans have to go to Malta to work, study or for medical reasons, and whether they like it or not have to face extra expenses to commute.
On the other hand, Maltese and tourists visit Gozo out of their own free will, and are choosing to stay away because it has become more expensive to make the trip.
In the first year since the ferry ticket price was increased, 73,000 more Gozitans crossed over when compared to the previous year, while 35,500 fewer Maltese and tourists visited Gozo, Dr Refalo said. In all,
Gozitans paid Lm300,000 more in fares while the cost for Maltese and foreigners increased by only Lm80,000.
In the first five months of the current financial year, the number of Gozitans continued to increase by 10,000 while the number of Maltese and tourists visiting Gozo dropped by a further 16,000, Dr Refalo said.
