The Malta Labour Party has announced that Dr Alfred Sant is to undergo surgery this morning. A medical bulletin is to be issued by the medical team after the operation, Labour Party General Secretary Jason Micallef said.
Messages wishing Dr Sant well have poured in from all quarters following the MLP statement. President Eddie Fenech Adami spoke to Dr Sant on the telephone and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi wrote to Dr Sant to wish him a speedy recovery. Best wishes were also extended by the Nationalist Party General Secretary Joe Saliba and Victor Galea, Secretary General of Alternattiva Demokratika.
Dr Sant is 59-years old and has been leading the Labour Party since 1992. He was the Prime Minister of Malta between 1996 and 1998.
