The Malta Labour Party has called on Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Mepa chairman Austin Walker to publicly explain why Mepa had prepared a statement saying the Fort Cambridge project was "approved" before the public consultation meeting was held.
The Labour Party said that this raises a number of serious issues about Mepa's operations which reduces the required public consultation into a "farce".
"What happened yesterday and their attitude continue to reduce the public's confidence in Mepa," the MLP said.
Mepa can never be an example of transparency and accountability, as the prime minister promised, if a statement about the project approval was prepared before the public consultation even took place, the MLP added.
"The very least that Dr Gonzi and Mr Walker can do in the circumstances is to give a public explanation about what happened during yesterday's board meeting," the MLP concluded.
