Apart from being one of the wettest, this month is also proving to be extremely cold as well, it has been considerably colder than usual this week.
Although there is still a week to go until the end of the month, January 2006 is already one of the 10 wettest Januaries ever recorded.
The wettest January was in 1973, when 225mm of rain fell, the driest January was in 1983 when only 8.5mm of rain fell, so far this month the mean rainfall is 155mm.
The maximum temperature in the past few days has been around 11°C, some four degrees less than the average temperature for this time of the year, the lowest temperature registered so far this month is 5.5°C
The lowest maximum temperature for January was 7.2°C which was recorded in both 1962 and 1968. The lowest minimum temperature in January was 2.2°C which was recorded in 1983.
The current cold spell will remain over the Maltese islands until the end of this week, but fortunately it is expected to start getting milder gradually from Friday onwards
