A group of young people from St George's Basilica are creating a large illuminated figure depicting the victory of St George over the dragon, representing evil. The figure is to be fixed on one of the most prominent vantage points, Gelmus Hill on the outskirts of Victoria, during the feast of St George in July. Gelmus Hill is where the fireworks displays are held during the feast.
The figure of St George and the dragon is designed by parishoner George James Cutajar, and is made of wood. The work has been done by the group of young people who came up with the idea of the project. The work involved in the installation of the large number of bulbs needed to cover the design, is being carried out by parishoner Joseph Buhagiar. It has been calculated that, in all, it will take nearly one thousand bulbs to illuminate the figure.
To compliment the new project, two large flag-poles have also been commissioned in Malta, the flag-poles are to be placed on Gelmus Hill during the weeks leading up to the St George's feast.
The inauguration and blessing of this illuminated image of St George, victorious over the dragon, is planned to be held on Saturday the 5th of July, at 9.30pm, on the Gelmus Hill, during a special celebration led by Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Joseph Farrugia, chaplain of the La Stella Philarmonic Society.
The inaugural celebration will be followed by a barbeque, also to be held on Gelmus hill.
