Following it's statement on Saturday, BirdLife has reported that the illegal hunting of protected species is still continuing.
The adult Night Heron shown here, which species is a common migrant over the Maltese Islands, was received by BirdLife Malta from the Police and suffered serious gunshot wounds to the head and beak.
The Night Heron (Maltese - Kwakka) is a protected species under Annex 1 of the Birds Directive and is a species of Conservation Concern in Europe due to declining populations.
With the ALE currently being deployed in limited numbers to prevent wildlife crimes, poachers are continuing to target protected species.
