Hondoq ir-Rummien development plan proposal

The proposal for the development of an area known as Hondoq ir-Rummien in Qala, as put forward by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, violates the principles of sustainable development, Labour spokesmen for the environment, Joe Brincat and Roderick Galdes and Labour spokesman for Gozo, Anton Refalo, said in a statement yesterday.

They said that it does not make sense for this large area, which is so close to the popular Hondoq ir-Rummien beach, to be given up for such a massive and intensive development, as is being proposed. The approval of this project could mean that the physical existence of this bay may be put at a risk. Moreover, one must also consider the right of the public to have access to the bay and its surroundings, they added.

The Labour MPs said that one must keep in mind that the traffic which will be generated during and after the execution of this project will have a negative impact on the Qala residents. "Whilst we believe that an effort must be made to ensure that the area is maintained by a rehabilitation project, this should not imply the need for such a development", they said.

They noted with regret that whenever a project of a fairly controversial nature such as this one is proposed, not enough space and time is allocated for the general public to express its opinion in an atmosphere of suitable and extensive consultation.

Some time ago, Qala residents had already expressed their disapproval for this particular project, the Labour MPs said. They added that they cannot understand how the government remained passive to the public?s concern, while using Mepa as a "protective shield" depending on circumstances.

The Labour MPs said that the proposed project in such a sensitive area of the island?s natural environment is inappropriate and does not conform with Gozo?s sustainable development requirements.

In the light of the Labour Party?s plan for the environment and the region of Gozo, the MPs believe that the natural characteristics of Gozo should not be sacrificed for the sake of speculation, but they must be protected and enjoyed by everyone.
