The meteoroligical office has said that Augusts weather was characterised by high heat stress indices and high levels of humidity. The highest relative humidity was recorded on August 29th, reaching a maximum of 100 per cent.
Coupled to the high relative humidity were the high August daytime temperatures, which showed a mean of 31.9 degrees Celcius, which is 1.2 degrees higher than the monthly average recorded during the last 85 years. This combination of high humidity and temperature led to a very high heat stress index, in the range of 39 to 42 degrees.
The hottest day was on August 23rd, when the thermometer reached a high of 37.4 degrees Celcius. The coolest night in August was on the 8th, when a low of 20.2 degrees Celcius was recorded.
