As the maximum temperature is expected to continue to rise further in the coming days, the health division has warned the public to take all necessary measures and precautions to avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
High temperatures cause water to be lost from the body at an accelerated rate, resulting in dehydration and can also lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Elderly people, infants and young children, people with chronic conditions and physically active people are the most at risk.
To avoid the effects of the heat wave it is very important to avoid any unnecessary exposure to the sun during the hottest periods of the day, between 11am and 4pm.
It is also important to stay in the coolest areas of both home and work, drink regularly to make up for the losses and eat more cold food, and of course to seek immediate medical attention if needed.
