The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, has inaugurated a ‘Health and Safety’ exhibition, which is being organised for the second year running, by Gozitan schools at the Sports Complex in Victoria.
This exhibition, appropriately titled ‘Feel Safe Be Safe’, is aimed at increasing Health and Safety awareness in every day life as well as to further educate the general public about the importance of creating a safer and healthier environment for students and staff in schools.
On addressing those present for the opening of this exhibition, Minister Debono, said that the inclusion of ‘Health and Safety’ as a subject in the curriculum has been welcomed by students, parents and educators alike and that it is our collective responsibility to see that our children are taught the importance of taking health and safety issues seriously.
Minister Debono also said that it is our duty to teach children from an early age on how to act responsibly and sensibly when faced with such existent and frequent dangers. Moreover she stressed upon the significance of increasing awareness about health & safety issues amongst parents, students and the public in general. She also referred to the attention given by her Ministry in order to create safer and more healthy environments in all Gozitan schools.
Minister Debono concluded her address by thanking all participating schools and students and appealed for the continuation of a joint effort for the further implementation of future educational activities in Gozo.
This year’s exhibition consists of a number of stands by various entities, charts compiled by students in the Gozo College, workshops run by secondary school students as well as a number of demonstrations by non-profitable organisations including a Police Dog Show, a First Aid demonstration by the Red Cross as well as an abseiling and fire fighting show by the Civil Protection Unit. An on-going power point presentation will also be running throughout the exhibition. The Gozo College is also organising a competition consisting of four events in which a group of students from all State and Church schools will participate.
The event is being co-ordinated by Gozo College Coordinator Frank Gatt and Education Officer for Health and Safety Philip Bonello in collaboration with ‘Health and Safety’ teachers and schools in Gozo.
The event started yesterday and will continue until Friday, all schools are invited to visit, participate and enjoy the events being held by the Gozo College students.
